Light Up the End

remember we would go outside
and lie under the evening trees
remember there were passers by
quiet we were roots unseen

remember that abandoned chair
we hung as high as we could climb
remember how the city was
a solar system undiscovered

remember how we took our time
up and down the hills between
biking through the pouring rain
to stand there dripping at your feet

that was another life
it was the garden where we began
still I get flashbacks now and again
it isn’t gone forever

forty years from now we could be gazing at the sky
smoke adrift between us, a great distance in the eye
forty years from now the earth might creak and slow down
I’m tired of all the constant running around

forty years from now we could be gazing at the sky
smoke adrift between us, a great distance in the eye
in forty years the earth might creak and slow right down again
tonight let’s spark the beginning of the end

let’s light up the end
light up the end
let’s light up the end
light up the end
